A Practice Rooted in Observation
Nootka Rose is a Kelowna-based landscape design studio focused on creating thoughtful, beautiful, and enduring landscapes.
We design outdoor spaces that work with the Okanagan's climate and growing conditions while reflecting the unique character of each property and the people who live there.
Our work is guided by a simple belief:
The most successful and most beautiful landscapes are the ones that feel like they belong where they are.
Rather than imposing a style onto a site, we work with existing conditions to create landscapes that feel natural, resilient, and enduring.
We believe landscape design should be:
Beautiful and functional
Appropriate for its location
Adapted to the Okanagan climate
Manageable to maintain
Rich in seasonal character
Resilient over time
Calm, layered, and enduring
Our goal is to create landscapes that feel natural, perform well, and become more beautiful as they mature. We are interested not only in how landscapes look when they are installed, but why they succeed years later.
Our Philosophy
I came to landscape design through a deep interest in plants and how landscapes function.
Watching how plants respond to different conditions, noticing which combinations thrive effortlessly and which struggle despite constant intervention, and seeing how light, soil, water, and topography quietly shape what is possible in a space all influenced my approach to design.
Over time, I became more interested in why landscapes succeed than in how quickly they could be built. Years spent studying gardens, experimenting with planting combinations, and observing how plants respond to the Okanagan climate shifted my focus from individual plants to the larger systems they create together.
I became increasingly interested in how thoughtful design can reduce maintenance, improve resilience, and create a stronger sense of place.
At the same time, I've always been drawn to spaces that feel calm, balanced, and beautiful. I want people to genuinely enjoy their outdoor spaces—to feel something when they step outside and to live with landscapes that are both functional and beautiful.
My work combines horticultural knowledge, ecological principles, and a love of beautiful outdoor spaces to create landscapes that feel natural, intentional, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
Nootka Rose grew from the belief that great landscapes are both beautiful and practical: spaces that work with their environment, support the people who use them, and become more beautiful with time.
